How I Understand Prayer.
Prayer is direct communication with God as we beseech Him for His Gifts and honour Him in His Goodness, Truth and Love.
But prayer is much, much more then that.
Prayer is every communication between God's creatures, man or Angel, and God, directly or indirectly, consciously or unconsciously, personal or communal.
The peak of perfection of all prayer is The Passion of Christ.
This Prayer redeemed all creation, spiritual and physical.
By The Cross, Jesus Christ brought all creation back to the Embrace of The Eternal-trinity.
50  12  32  And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself. (John)
By Jesus' Prayer of The Cross, He drew unto Himself all things, spiritual and physical, past present and to come, forever.
So, we perceive that prayer is much more then verbal or mental communication with The Eternal-trinity.
Suffering is a prayer.
From this Holy Cross, Jesus said Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. Luke
Thus we observe that
ignorance itself, is a prayer. Because of our ignorance, The Eternal-father will have mercy upon us.
But the great Saint Paul in his first Epistle to the Thessalonians, tells us:-

59 5 16 Always rejoice.  59 5 17 Pray without ceasing.  59 5 18 In all things give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all.

He says:- Pray without ceasing.
How can we
pray without ceasing?
The Church tells us that we are easily able to do this by offering our whole lives, everything we do and say and possess, up to God.
We don't have to be on our knees, arms outstretched--no, we simply, merely, offer up our every action and thought as a prayer and herein, we are capable of making a prayer of every second of our lives.
The Universal Church recommends that, in offering our every thought and action to The Almighty, as a prayer, we do so through the co-operation and the intervention of The Woman of Scripture, The Mother of God, Mary.
This very smart and resourceful method of appealing to The Almighty, through Jesus, by way of His Mother, is a proven and profitable form of prayer, for the Glory of God and for the providence of His People.
Such a prayer is generated in and through and by the Infinite Merits of Jesus Christ and processed via His Mystical Body, The Universal Church of Pope Benedict XVI.
Such a prayer receives the absolute preference of The Almighty.
Such a prayer saves the world from its own suicidal tendencies by way of corruption and deception and self-gratification.
P 1 4 9  And the Lord said to Cain: Where is thy brother Abel? And he answered, I know not: am I my brother's keeper?
1 4 10  And he said to him: What hast thou done?

the voice of thy brother's blood
crieth to me from the earth.  P  Genesis

The Almighty is moved by the murder of Abel and so we have a further form of prayer, an unspoken prayer, which appeals to His Justice.
When we are wronged, as was Abel, an appeal goes up to The Almighty and this means that every wrong done to us, whether great or small, becomes an appeal to God's Justice.
This indicates that The Almighty rights every wrong here on earth or in eternity.
The prayer of the evil.
It is not just the suffering of the good that becomes a prayer to The Almighty but the suffering of the evil, too!
Indeed, The Almighty uses the suffering of the evil people to bring them to Eternal-life as history proves, time after time.
How many great sinners have emerged out of their suffering as great Saints?
We see it around us all the time--when suffering comes upon someone or someone's family, that person turns back to God seeking His divine Intervention.
However, there are also those great sinners who do not respond to their great suffering by turning to God, but on the contrary, blame God for their suffering and delve even deeper into their demented hatred of God and all things Good.

Nevertheless, the suffering
of these dammed souls
remains a prayer,
even if the resultant, offered Graces
are rejected by them.

It seems to me that herein we have a great treasury of prayer awaiting to be gathered up. If the evil souls reject the great source of Grace that result from their suffering, then why don't we step in and take up what they reject?
Perhaps God's Grace offered to the suffering, when rejected, returns to Him just as the peace of the Apostles returned to them by those unworthy?
P 47 10 12  And when you come into the house, salute it, saying: Peace be to this house. 47 10 13  And if that house be worthy, your peace shall come upon it; but if it be not worthy, your peace shall return to you. P Matthew.
So what I am suggesting is that we make an appeal for these Graces, lost upon those dammed.
This is the meaning behind that part of the prayer to The Eternal-father,
Prayer of The Signs of The Cross, (PSC) which states (in part):-
